What is Clinical Research?

  • Clinical research is a study to answer specific research questions about new drug treatments.
  • Clinical research is conducted in phases.  Each phase has a different purpose.  Suburban Research Associates generally conducts Phase II, III, and Phase IV trials,
  • In Phase II trials, the study drug is given to a small group of people (100-300) to see if it is effective and to further evaluate its safety.
  • In Phase III trials, the study drug is given to a large group of people (1,000-3,000) to confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects and compare it to commonly used treatments.  Information is collected that will allow the drug treatment to be used safely.
  • Phase IV trials and post marketing studies provide additional information including drug’s risks, benefits, as well as optimal use.
